Spacehopper are a high‑energy live electronic act, fusing the hypnotic pulse of trance, acid‑techno and dub with a raw punk edge.
Spacehopper are a UK live electronic dance act fusing the hypnotic pulse of trance, acid techno and dub with a raw punk edge. Since forming in 2000, they've carved out their own space in the UK's underground and festival scenes, blurring the line between live band and rave experience.
Their sound combines pumping beats, layered synths, electric guitars, expressive vocals and deep, resonant basslines. Built around synthesizers and live instrumentation, their music moves between hypnotic grooves and euphoric dancefloor energy. Think Orbital meets Leftfield with a punk twist.
Founded by producer and multi-instrumentalist Chris, Spacehopper began as a solo project rooted in graphical scores and machine-driven experimentation. The project evolved into a live act, initially joined by percussionist Paul, followed by bassist Phil in 2010. Darren took over on bass in 2015, and in 2025 Jo joined on vocals, adding a new dimension to the band's sound. Mell recorded the spoken words for Energy in Motion and plans to come out live with us in 2027.
Spacehopper's breakthrough came in 2013 when Magick Eye Records discovered them performing at Bearded Theory Festival. Their debut single, Sounds and Colours, reached Number One on the Beatport charts, earning wider recognition and features in Record Collector magazine and on iTunes Germany. Follow-up releases included Trancendance, which reached Number 7 on the Beatport Trance charts, and Pure Essence in 2023.
On stage, Spacehopper bring together live instrumentation and electronic dance music in a performance that blurs the boundaries between live band and rave. From festival stages at Equinox, Landed and Bearded Theory to underground venues, they have built a loyal following known as The Bouncers, drawn to the music's hypnotic rhythms, positive energy and powerful live atmosphere.
Their debut album, Energy in Motion, brings together six tracks and captures the feel-good positivity and emotion at the heart of Spacehopper's music. Recorded using traditional studio techniques, with live-played synths and keyboards and analogue signal flow, the album aims to retain the warmth, depth and human feel of their performances.
Spacehopper is more than a band - it's a movement: it's a celebration of sound, positive energy, hard work and shared experience. This is Energy in Motion and they're ready to take their sound to the next dimension inviting listeners along for the journey.
The Debut Album from Spacehopper
The Debut Album from Spacehopper — A Journey 26 Years in the Making — This is Energy in Motion.
Some of the music on Energy in Motion began life in 2000. What started as ideas developed through graphical scores has evolved over the years, with tracks being revisited, reshaped and developed as Spacehopper’s sound continued to grow. Those early concepts became the foundations for a collection that brings together our history, our musical influences and the energy of our live performances. The result is an album that looks forward while retaining a connection to where it all began.
From Graphical Scores to the Studio
The initial creation of some tracks through graphical scores was an important part of the journey. Rather than following a conventional approach to writing, these visual representations provided a framework for developing musical ideas, which continued to evolve over time.
For Energy in Motion, we wanted to capture the warmth, depth and human feel of Spacehopper’s live sound. We recorded and engineered the album using traditional studio techniques, playing many of the synthesizer and keyboard parts live and keeping analogue signal flow at the heart of our approach.
The aim was to preserve the movement, atmosphere and positive energy of the performances — combining electronic production with the human character of musicians playing together.
Six Tracks, One Journey
We deliberately kept the album to six tracks, allowing each composition the space it deserves. This also reflects our plans for a vinyl edition, where playing time can influence the sound quality that can be achieved. Rather than squeeze more music onto the record at the expense of the sound, we wanted to give these tracks room to breathe.
From the evolving sound of Sounds and Colours (Part 1) to Trancendance, Into the Light, Sounds and Colours (Part 2), Stardust and Spaceport, the album moves through a landscape of driving rhythms, layered synthesizers, deep bass and immersive electronic soundscapes.
Emotion is Energy in Motion
For us, this album is about more than six tracks. It represents years of creativity, experimentation and evolution — a meeting point between ideas conceived decades ago and the music Spacehopper continues to make today.
Our aim was to capture the raw, human energy of our studio sessions and the spirit of our live performances: the movement, the atmosphere and the feeling of playing together.
Energy in Motion is a celebration of sound, positive energy, hard work and shared experience.
Spacehopper isn't just a band — It's a movement — This is Energy in Motion.
